Game-Based Learning
I partnered with a school-based instructional technology specialist to develop an integrated performance task for third grade students. This task was a culminating project where students demonstrated their knowledge of Ancient Roman communities by building virtual representations in Minecraft. The project was aligned to state-level learning outcomes and tailored to student learning needs.
Motivating Learners
The task was designed to be highly engaging for students, leveraging their existing interest in Minecraft and building. Students were eager to demonstrate their learning in this new and innovative platform where they were able to collaborate with peers and make unique contributions to their Minecraft world to mimic those of Ancient Rome.
Intentional Scaffolding
The task was scaffolded with multiple planning and organizational tasks with the teacher and project partners to ensure adequate progress and opportunities for feedback. Each student had an assigned community role and conferenced with peers to complete supported research and planning ahead of building in the program.
